Allow me to explain. The film is set in the video gaming world, where all of the video-game characters live, unknown to the children who play their games in the arcade. The film pays homage to all of the classic gaming characters who have appeared on your console throughout the years. Characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario and Pacman appear as minor parts in the film, all extremely popular and well known protagonists in video games aimed at the younger demographic in the audience. But in order to keep the adults entertained they have included characters from games that the children may not be able to recognise, for example Zangief from the original Street Fighter series is part of the bad anonymous meeting; plus Snake from Metal Gear Solid is seen having an idle chat with Scorpion from Mortal Kombat! These are from games that the younger audience members will be either not of the right age to play themselves or have never heard of before. This makes the link back to the singling out of a joke for an older audience to enjoy. Wreck-It Ralph reflects the fact that this is the first time a generation of parents are young enough to have grown up playing video games themselves, so the film will be an exciting entertainment for the kids while inducing a pleasant sense of nostalgia for parents too.
As to the question of whether the film is another member of the Disney Classic film list – a list already chockful of memorable movies like Toy Story and Snow White – only time will tell. Certainly I would say it is the first film of its kind that truly links the whole family together whilst watching it, and in my opinion Wreck-It Ralph has the makings of a timeless family classic...But it's still not as good as Finding Nemo!
