The show has been widely popular, with series 9 attracting a total of 1.2 million viewers and also being aired in countries such as Australia. A lot of this popularity is due to the programme allowing us normal folk to have an insight into the lives of people who you may say were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. So why is this show so gruesomely addictive? Maybe it’s because we get to watch them in the most expensive parts of London as well as seeing them jet off to places such as Dubai, New York and Cannes – oh, how we wish we were them! All the while, there is some major drama going on.
However, there has been some controversy about the show. Some may say that Made In Chelsea is just a copycat version of The Only Way Is Essex, which aired a year before MIC, but with more attractive, more lavish, much more upper class and less tacky chacters. There has also been controversy on whether the show can actually be called ‘reality TV’. This is due to the shocking acting and unbelievable story lines: surely Alex Mytton couldn’t have been stupid enough to have cheated on Binky Felstead that many times; and how is it possible to ‘bump’ into people unexpectedly on the street nearly every day? Is the show actually scripted and stage-managed by the producers, or is what we see the actual lives of real people?
Nevertheless, this controversy doesn’t seem to stop people from being obsessed with the ‘reality’ show and ready to watch it at 10:00pm on the dot on a Monday night, eager to see what new dramas await.
