The book tells the story of Sophie May, a young woman who sees her life as a very normal one; Sophie lives in Rosefont in Kent with her widowed mother. In primary school, Sophie was a very popular child whose life seemed one of hope and success; however, tragedy within her family changes Sophie’s outlook on life. For the past eight years Sophie has worked in a small, quaint tea shop named Tea-On-The-Hill which seems to be the centre of her life. It is here she meets Molly (an older woman) and very quickly their friendship becomes one we wish we all had –and, of course, this small tea shop is where she meets Billy Buskin. Billy is a very well-established actor and a teen heart throb and as soon as the pair meet we are already hoping for a fairy-tale, happily-ever-after, feel-good ending.
However, as Sophie is quickly thrown into the limelight and into Billy’s very hectic, very exposed life, will the pair fulfil our hopes of such an ending?
There are times when we laugh with the characters (and times where we laugh more so at their expense!), times when we cry alongside them, and times when we want to jump into the book and throw that drink at them or be a lot less polite than Sophie is! Take Paul, Billy’s agent, who is very much a big part of Billy’s success: he seems to disprove of Sophie from the outset and, as we’ve all grown to love Sophie, you’re sure to disprove of him!
On the other hand, you can’t help but love Molly. She has all the best qualities of your grandma and best friend rolled into one and, after all, she is the hero responsible for making Sophie the lovely, friendly young woman she grows up to be.
Whilst the story is a happy, romantic tale of friendship and love, the end of the book brings tragedy – and one we don’t expect. An extremely sensitive subject is brought into the book and I for one was crying as the tragedy unfolded. However, Sophie’s sadness and the situation are dealt with extremely well and Giovanna, we don’t only thank you but we applaud you.
If you’re looking for a book that promises happiness, sadness, romance, friendship and all in all a good read, then Billy and Me is definitely for you! Just make sure you have a packet of tissues for the parts that make you cry with sadness and cry a host of happy tears!
